The INSTRUMEX High Volume Sampler, Model IPM 164 (BL), is an ambient air sampling system based on a simple design standardized by the USEPA for monitoring Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) in ambient air. The system also supports simultaneous sampling of pollutant gases such as SO₂, NOₓ, Cl₂, H₂S and CS₂ through its gaseous sampling attachment.

The collected particulate matter and gaseous samples can subsequently be analyzed using suitable chemical and analytical methods to determine pollutant concentrations. The sampler is designed for air pollution measurement in urban as well as industrial areas.

How It Works

The mass concentration of suspended particulate matter in ambient air is determined by measuring the mass of particulate matter collected and the volume of air sampled.

In the INSTRUMEX IPM 164 (BL), the airflow passing through the filter is monitored by measuring the pressure drop across an orifice plate positioned between the filter holder and blower. A calibrated manometer measures this pressure drop, while the flow scale is calibrated in cubic metres per minute.

A microprocessor time totalizer and programmable timer record the duration of sampling, allowing the total volume of air sampled to be determined.

The collected particulate matter is measured gravimetrically, using a balance capable of measurement to the nearest milligram. The collected dust can also be subjected to further analysis using techniques such as electron microscopy, atomic absorption and infrared spectroscopy for identification of trace elements or components.

Gaseous Sampling Attachment

The IPM 164 (BL) can be equipped with a separate gaseous sampling arrangement for simultaneous collection of gaseous pollutants.

The attachment provides:
